Special Instructions

Plasma Viscosity is the preferred test

Test should be performed within 4 hours of collection

Factors affecting results

ESR may be more difficult to read on patients with a high reticulocyte count, as the red cell/plasma interface may be hazy.

Paeds 0 – ≤ 18 yrs

19 – < 50 yrs

≥50 yrs

Male

≤ 10 mm/hr

≤ 15 mm/hr

≤ 20 m/hr

Female

≤ 20 mm/hr

≤ 30 m/hr

Samples with an ESR concentration of greater than 100 mm/hr will be reported as >100 mm/hr to due the difficulty in discerning an exact concentration at this magnitude.
