Blood Components and Products

The following blood components are stocked at the RD&E:

• Red cells
• Platelet Concentrates
• Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)
• Cryoprecipitate

Blood components can be ordered on EPIC, click here to see further information on how to make the order.  If your order is urgent please follow up the electronic order with a phone call to the laboratory on ext. 2465 / 2467.

If you do not have access to EPIC you can order components by sending a blood sample and request form or by phoning the laboratory (ext:2467).

Emergency group O blood can be accessed from the following blood fridges:

Main Issue Blood fridge A2 template: 2 adult units

Main Theatre Blood fridge: 2 adult units

Labour Ward blood fridge: 2 adult units and 1 neonatal unit

Rapid access to the emergency group O blood is via the BloodTrack kiosk, by pressing the red “touch here for emergency units” button, there is no requirement for a pick up slip.

At the main issue fridge and main theatre fridge press for “O Neg” units, remember to scan the blood units at the kiosk before returning to the clinical area.

At the Labour Ward fridge, after pressing the red button, select from “patient older than 1” to access the adult units or “patient younger than 1” to access the neonatal unit

Octaplex is the PCC available at the RD&E. This is an emergency use product, rapid access is via the main theatres batch fridge and from the laboratory. For further information on ordering, accessing and administration of Octaplex refer to the information on the Electronic Blood Tracking page

Clotting factors are available from the transfusion laboratory, order on EPIC and phone ext 2467 or 2465 to order

Fibrinogen concentrate is available for condition under licence and in the event of a massive haemorrhage in maternity, in accordance with the Management of a Massive Blood Loss Guidelines

C1 Esterase inhibitor concentrate is available from the transfusion laboratory, order on EPIC and phone ext 2467 or 2465 to order

Tetanus Antibody is available from the transfusion laboratory, order on EPIC and phone ext 2467 or 2465 to order

Anti-D Immunoglobulin available from the transfusion laboratory, order on EPIC and phone ext 2467 or 2465 to order

Human Albumin Solution (4.5%, 5% and 20%) available from the transfusion laboratory, order on EPIC and phone ext 2467 or 2465 to order

Octaplas is available from the transfusion laboratory, order on EPIC and phone ext 2467 or 2465 to order
