About Us

The Department of Clinical Microbiology & Infection is a comprehensive, clinically led service provided for Bacteriology (including Mycology and Parasitology) & Virology (Serology & Molecular). Clinical advice is also available for Infection Prevention and Control.

We are a part of the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, have laboratories on both the Royal Devon & Exeter and North Devon District Hospital sites and provide services to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospitals, North Devon District Hospital, community hospitals and Primary care within North and East Devon, and other NHS Trusts within the South West region.

 

Accreditation

The Laboratory is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and participates in all relevant External Quality Assurances schemes.

(For any test(s)/procedure(s) not currently included in the defined scope of the laboratory’s UKAS Accreditation, ISO15189 schedule – this will be indicated on their test page on this website in the method section.)

The Laboratory has accredited training status for Medical, Clinical Scientist and Biomedical Scientist training.

 

Legal Duty to Report

Epidemiological data is routinely sent to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

Please note: the Laboratory and our Clinicians have a legal duty to report in England notifiable organisms to the UKHSA and notifiable diseases to the local Health Protection Team (HPT).

 

Informed Consent

For contractual purposes each request accepted by the laboratory for examination(s) shall be considered an agreement.

Responsibility for obtaining informed consent for testing lies with the requestor; it should cover the test(s) requested, implications of any results obtained and the disclosure of relevant personal details and clinical information to healthcare personnel involved in providing the testing (see https://www.exeterlaboratory.com/about/ for our confidentiality policy.)

In instances where we are unable to perform testing in house or for specialist and epidemiological testing we will send samples to accredited outside laboratories for analysis, in these instances we will provide relevant personal and clinical information to enable the referral laboratory to process the samples and interpret results.
