1 x Non-gel tube (6 mL) and 1 x large whole blood EDTA transfusion tube (6 mL).
Both tubes should be filled to 6mL.
It is extremely important that a strict procedure is adhered to when collecting blood for cryoglobulins. Any variation from the procedure can lead to premature cryoprecipitation and a potential false negative result.
The laboratory must be contacted beforehand and a trained member of staff will attend the venepuncture. Pre-warmed collection tubes will be provided by the laboratory and handed to the phlebotomist once the syringe has been inserted into the patient’s arm. The sample will then be transported to the laboratory at 37°C. It may be more convenient for patients of General Practitioners to have the blood sample taken in the Medical Outpatients Blood Room at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford) so that this procedure can be adhered to.
