Specimens for routine histology should be sent in a suitably labelled and sized specimen pot containing sufficient formalin fixative to completely cover the specimen. Specimens with insufficient fixative may autolyse and become unsuitable for subsequent histological investigation. Please see Formalin filled specimen containers for further information.
Specimens should be brought to the laboratory at the earliest opportunity.
Radioactive samples should be placed in the lead cabinet in the histology specimen reception area outside of normal working hours. Please leave the request card on the reception bench NOT in the lead cabinet, to alert the staff members a specimen has been received.
Specimens in formalin should be kept at room temperature (not refrigerated).
